Protests
Tuesday, April 11, 2006

Hundreds of thousands of protesters marched up and down the streets of America trying to voice their opinion on the new immigration bill, which could make illegal immigrants and those who hire them criminals.

What I find most interesting about this entire thing is that when news reporters asked random people in the crowds what they're doing there, what they want to accomplish, and what they would do if they were in power - most said they didn't know. As a matter of fact, the kids participating in protests who ditched school have no clue what they're protesting for, but instead it's for Mexican pride they claim.

Which is fine I suppose, but make that clear; that you don't know what you're doing out there instead of causing confusion and chaos.

After all we have laws for a reason and crossing the border illegally is breaking the law here in the United States.

Instead of shouting and skipping school, I think it would be more productive to come up with solutions that could be implemented in American law without causing threat from terrorists.

Richard,

Hope you are doing well. I read your recent blog and have been thinking bout it for the past few days. In regards to these recent protests and the reporting of the news keep in mind a few things:

1) just because someone is a news reporter does not mean that they aren't trying to promote a particular political point of view, or that the TV network they work for might have political agenda as well.

2) although most people are ignorant in this world, it is my belief that the majority of people that participated in the protests knew what is was about. It would be very easy to only to show people on the news that were either not very articulate or knew very little about what the protest were actually about. by doing this it shows to the American public that not only are Hispanics not very socially aware, but that they are not a threat to us as well. The real question is how many people were actually interviewed total and if all of them came across as not knowing what was going on.

3) There are three types of statistics: statistics, damn statistics, and lies. My point is that if a reporter took a random sampling of the crowd, of lets say 1000 people, or even 100, (a statistically significant number), and found that of those people there 75% didn't know what they wanted to accomplish, and what they would do if they were in power, I would say you might be on to something. Don't get me wrong, I do support our laws. But I do have a couple of questions for you:

a) Does a policy of Amnesty for those who have worked illegally in the USA for 5 years undermine our laws, or reward people who are hardworking and show the understanding and compassion of our government?

b) Europe has had a successful "Guest Worker" policy for many years. in it workers pay local taxes to the communities in which they work, are not citizens, but are granted access to other countries where low cost work is exchanged for a higher GDP in the neighboring country. Do you think this might work in any capacity in the USA?

c) Is the reason this has become an issue in the news recently an effort to distract us from Bush's low numbers in the polls and bad press in Iraq, or is actually a result of a broken system to legally allow people to work in the US, and also to legally become citizens?

A broken system to legally allow people to work in the US? Tons of people come to america though legitimate ways. Just because uneducated and unskilled people arent the first to come over, does not mean the system is broken. The thing that is broken is out border security. How do millions of people come here without someone knowing! How do these people hold protests! Arrest them! They broke our laws! Get them out of here! Amnesty is a joke! Our government shouldnt be compassionate, they just need to enforce our laws! If they did this, we wouldnt be having this problem. Solution to this illegals problem is: Make it a felony to help illegals aliens. Have grey hounds that go to mexico and allow the illegals to ride it free. Put all the illegals found on that grey hound. And lastly, beef up our border security. Add lots more man power. Dang, if that does work build that f'ing wall.
